Izaicinājumi mītu un teiku tulkošanā no latviešu valodas angļu valodā

Abstract

Maģistra darba tēma ir “Izaicinājumi mītu un teiku tulkošanā no latviešu valodas angļu valodā”, un uzmanība ir vērsta uz izaicinājumiem un grūtībām, kas rodas tulkojot latviešu mītus un teikas angļu valodā. Maģistra darba pētījuma mērķis ir noteikt galvenos izaicinājumus tulkojot šāda tipa tekstus un apkopot ieteikumus turpmākiem nākotnes tulkojumiem. Lai sasniegtu mērķi, autore izvirzīja šādus uzdevumus: veikt teorētisku analīzi par latviešu tautas teiku tulkojumiem svešvalodā – angļu valodā, raksturot kādas stratēģijas un principi palīdz tulkošanā, noteikt kādas problēmas rodas ar latviešu mītu un teiku tulkošanu angļu valodā, sastādīt ieteikumu rezumējumu. Teorētiskā daļa sastāv no trim daļām. Pirmajā daļā tiek aprakstīta mītu un teiku vēsture, kā arī tiek paskaidrots, kas jāsaprot ar terminu ‘mitologiskā domāšana’ un ko tā nozīmē. Otrajā daļā tiek aprakstīti aspekti, funkcijas un lietas, kas jāņem vērā, lai teksts nezaudētu savu nozīmi un īpašības tulkošanas procesa laikā. Trešajā daļā autore apraksta stratēģijas un paņēmienus un to, cik ļoti tās palīdz tulkojot mitoloģiskos darbus. Tāpat autore apraksta kādu loma viņas darbam varētu būt saistībā ar studentu apmaiņas programmām. Beidzamajā ceturtajā un pētījuma prakstiskajā daļā, autore veic divdesmit mītu un teiku tulkojumu no latviešu valodas angļu valodā, aprakstot sastaptās tulkošanas problēmas un izaicinājumus. Maģistra darba mērķauditorija ir gan topošie, gan jau esošie tulkotāji, kuri nodarbojas ar vai ir saskārušies ar tulkojumu pasūtījumiem literatūrzinātnes virzienā, un personas, kuru šis darbs varētu interesēt.

The Master’s thesis’s theme is “Challenges in translating myths and legends from Latvian into English”, and the focus is on the challenges and difficulties encountered in translating Latvian myths and legends in English. The aim is to identify the main challenges in translating this type of texts and to summarize recommendations for future translations. To achieve the goal, the author brought forward the following tasks: to carry out a theoretical analysis of Latvian legends’ translations into a foreign language — English, to describe what strategies and principles help in translation, to determine what problems arise with the translation of Latvian myths and legends into English, and to draw up a summary of recommendations. The theoretical part consists of three parts. The first part describes the history of myths and legends and explains what is understood by the term ‘mythologic thinking’. The second part describes the aspects, functions, and things that need to be taken into account so that the text does not lose its meaning and characteristics during the translation process. In the third part, the author describes strategies and techniques and how they help translate mythological works. The author also describes what role her work could play in the context of student exchange programs. In the final fourth and the practical part of the study, the author translates twenty myths and legends from Latvian into English, describing the problems and challenges encountered in translation. The target audience of the Master’s thesis is both prospective and existing translators who work with or have encountered translation orders in literary translation, and persons who might be interested in this work.
