PhD Thesis „The Ethnopolitical Discourse Analysis: Power Relations of Language
Communities in Latvia”
Annotation
In the society of Latvia several indicators of conflict between Latvian and Russian
ethnolinguistic groups can be observed. Meanwhile, there are no open socio-political
or ethnic conflicts between the both language communities at the group level. The
thesis is elaborated in the perspective of interpretative sociology, applying the
poststructuralist discourse theory, critical discourse analysis and the analysis of large
qualitative data corpora. The aim of the study is to explain the power relations of the
two biggest language communities in Latvia through the approach of discourse
theories. In the thesis one can find the epistemology of discourse theory, the analysis
of theoretical approaches applied to the structural analysis of ethnopolitical discourses
of the language communities and politicians. The study explains and justifies the
discursive conflict of the language communities as a form of their power relations and
its resultant manifestation in social reality.
Key words: discourse, language community, power, conflict, ethno politics.
