Latvijas Universitātes kultūrvēsturiskais mantojums izstādēs: Bibliotēkas versija

Abstract

As a memory institution, a library is responsible for the preservation and public availability of the cultural heritage of its umbrella organization. For example, the Library of the University of Latvia is concerned not only with UL's information provision on a daily basis, but also with its intellectual, scientific and cultural heritage from a long-term perspective. It is not enough to just accumulate a large collection of material related to the University; rather materials should be carefully selected, systematised, processed, analysed, made available and ultimately publicized for further use and research. A large amount of material is included in the UL's e-resource repository and in the UL Library section of the UL’s internet portal, covering the history and personalities, intellectual achievements, publications and treasures of UL Library. Traditional exhibitions, based on the cultural and historical heritage of the UL are also created and in these is invested a considerable amount of research work from the Library itself. The question arises whether the library has a user-oriented or simply archiving task. It is difficult to find a compromise between the student orientated and a serious academic environment to show the information of both visual and factological material. It is related to the identity of the institution, including the publicity materials, but it requires different forms of expression.
